Greek Asklepieion Vase
Asclepius is the god of medicine and health in Greek mythology, with his staff, bowl, rooster and dog with a snake in his hand. Asclepieion is the name given to the health centers established to heal the sick in ancient times. Pergamon (Bergama) Asklepieion, one of the most famous health centers of Anatolia, BC. It was founded in the 4th century. The center with the Asclepius Temple and Sanctuary has been flooded not only by the people of Pergamon, but also by visitors seeking healing from many parts of the Aegean World.
Due to health problems, all Ancient Age societies showed interest in Asklepios and showed the importance given to him and the mythology that developed around him through coins.
The first use of the snake as a medical symbol in history is seen in the Sumerians. Here, the symbol is two snakes, one male and one female, wrapped in sticks. The stick’s tree of life, that is, life; This motif, in which the snake represents youth, has been used as a protective and healing symbol in the form of a stick-snake or two coiled snakes in paintings and reliefs for thousands of years, and has been the symbol of medicine since the cult of Asclepius.
On the vase, two snake figures, which are used as a symbol of medicine, are depicted as a protective and healing snake. Figures taken from Bergama coins with the theme of Asclepius, the God of Health, minted in the Roman Imperial Period, were adapted on glass. On one side, the right-facing bust of the Roman Emperor Commodus the Young, with his name and titles, Asclepius, the God of Health and Healing, and his daughter Hygieia are depicted. On the other side, the laurel wreathed bust of the Roman Emperor Commodus facing right, with his name and titles, Asclepius sitting on the throne, is depicted feeding a snake from the patera he is holding in his right hand.
The Asklepios Vase is produced from handmade amber colored glass, and all the patterns on the work are handcrafted using 24-carat gold gilding.
